Historically, to be an alcoholic in Ukraine was to die. It's that simple ... painfully simple. And this matters to us. First Light Partners is building a legacy of recovery and freedom from chemical dependency for a nation.
We have led the way with professional training, public outreach, publishing, and quality treatment for Ukraine, the New Independent States of the Former Soviet Union, and Russian speaking people from across the world.
Few places remain in the world where any real hope for recovery from alcoholism is absent. Ukraine, the largest country in Eastern Europe is one of them. The World Health Organization has called alcoholism “the single greatest public health crisis in modern Ukrainian history – unprecedented in this century.” Such a reality just should not be in this day and age. But it remains so ... and step by step, year in and year out, First Light Partners moves closer to the day when such a tragedy is only a memory.
Of course people care. The tears in the eyes of the children, the men and women who struggle to confront the disease, the families whose lives have been torn apart ... they all care.
First Light Partners-Zarya is an Oregon based US nonprofit organization. Since the mid-1990's, we've been working through training, education, and public awareness to address this public health crisis. We've taken some enormous steps toward the day when all who seek treatment and recovery from this treatable disease will have access. But that day has not arrived. Our work continues as we strive to bring hope to a nation where once there was none.
From the Ministry of Health of Ukraine to the dedicated Ukrainian men and women we work with, our work has been called “a national catharsis,” “the new miracle of Ukraine,” and “our only hope." Our efforts have impacted lives across Ukraine and throughout the world once hidden behind the iron curtain.
But massive systemic change takes time, and it takes leadership. Decades behind the Iron Curtain, archaic treatment methodologies, and many other factors have left those who suffer from the disease of alcoholism without hope. But there are countless men and women who would do anything to recover were it possible. We are making it possible.
Ukraine is a beautiful country with a long and dignified history. With nearly fifty million people and a history that reaches back 1,500 years, its culture, sciences, and arts have all made their mark on the world. But there's a sad cloud over the nation and it has haunted them for as long as they can remember. No, it's not the shadow of the Soviet Union or Russia from which their independence was born in 1991. It's an alcoholism problem among the most severe in the world. Even centuries old Ukrainian folk songs bemoan this tragedy. Untreated and mistreated alcoholism tears families and communities apart, and leaves orphans and widows in numbers too great to count. We are changing this -- step by step, day by day, year after year.
